Heritage Centre, Ledbury

The story of Ledbury's past is displayed in this timber-framed building dating from 15th Century, which is believed to have been built by East Anglian woollen merchants, before it became the town's Grammar School. Local volunteers man the Heritage Centre, which is now under the wing of the Ledbury Places charity.

Discover Ledbury's history at the Heritage Centre. We have displays of our local history, including the building of the canal and the railway, the geology of the area, the development of the town and our famous poets John Masefield and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Look up and down our massive chimney and try your hand at Victorian sums. If you have any memories of times when the Heritage Centre was lived in, add them to our memories board. Donations welcome.

Painted Room (Ledbury Town Council)

Wall paintings were discovered in the Town Council offices during major restoration work in 1989 and have been dated to the mid 1560s. They represent the expensive tapestries and leather hangings that would normally be found in the homes of wealthy aristocrats, and are thought to be the work of a jobbing artist who has created a cheaper version for the up and coming Merchant Gentry.

The 16th Century Painted Room will be open as usual on Community Day. Our knowledgeable guides will give you a short introductory talk (5 minutes) and show you the special paintings. We have children's costumes for dressing up and a small set of stocks to entertain the children!
