U3A - Ledbury & District

U3A (The University of the Third Age) is a nationwide organisation based on local groups providing opportunities for retired and semi-retired people to come together and develop their interests. We don't study for qualifications, we just enjoy taking part, meeting people and learning from one-another. Members share their knowledge and experience with others in interest groups, running informal activity sessions covering a wide range of subjects and activities.

We will have a display stand which will give details of activities that our members can get involved with. We are an organisation for those who are retired or approaching retirement. We have may interest groups that provide a wide range of opportunities to come together, learn from each other and have fun. Members will be present throughout the session to talk to people who might be interested in joining our organisation.

Ledbury Places

The Old Grammar school is a long, low half-timbered building sitting at the top of Church Lane, the cobbled street that runs from the Market House up to the parish church of St Michaels and All Angels. On the ground floor is the Heritage Centre, a museum about the history of the town?s buildings.

We will have new exhibits and quizzes for children. We always welcome people who want to be come volunteers at the Heritage Centre and get involved in promoting and sharing the history of our heritage buildings with visitors. This year we have new project which involves young people interviewing older people about their educational experiences. If you want to take part, we will be collecting names so we can arrange interviews. In some instances, your interview will be filmed and will form part of our new interactive educational exhibition.

Painted Room (Ledbury Town Council)

Wall paintings were discovered in the Town Council offices during major restoration work in 1989 and have been dated to the mid 1560s. They represent the expensive tapestries and leather hangings that would normally be found in the homes of wealthy aristocrats, and are thought to be the work of a jobbing artist who has created a cheaper version for the up and coming Merchant Gentry.

The 16th Century Painted Room will be open as usual on Community Day. Our knowledgeable guides will give you a short introductory talk (5 minutes) and show you the special paintings. We have children?s costumes for dressing up and a small set of stocks to entertain the children! Free

From 1100 - 1300 and 1400 - 1600 to 1600.

Bell Ringers - Ledbury Church Bellringers

Bell ringing has been going on for over 400 years in our country. St Michael's Church Ledbury enjoys a recently restored and expanded ring of ten sweet-sounding bells

We will ring the bells during the morning at 9.30 and 12.30. The tower will be open throughout the morning (except when the bells are ringing) for people to visit. The tower will be manned by volunteers. Members of the public are very welcome to come and see and hear us. Numbers for going up the tower to see the bells will need to be limited at any one time so some people may need to wait for a short while. There is a much acclaimed exhibition on the ground floor of the tower which is a place we recommend all Ledbury residents to visit. Voluntary donations may be made to the Ringing Education Fund if people are so inclined. We want people to consider learning to ring the bells and also to learn a bit more about an important historic building

From 930 to 1300.
